Thank you for the replies to this blog. Some of you have talked about some very painful and real situations that grandparents are dealing with. While the SOLVE acronym is a good place to start, some situations require a higher level of support and assistance. For example, some grandparents have been cut out of their grandchildrens’ lives for a very long time while others have grandchildren who are coping with significant mental health issues. Or, their precious granddaughter or grandson is struggling with an issue that, if not resolved, may have serious long term negative consequences. For these cases, I recommend that grandparents rally support and reach out.

By rally support, I mean that, if you haven’t already done so, put together a team of trusted friends who can pray with and for you and offer a kind and compassionate listening ear. Surround yourself with people who understand that prayer is an important tool for walking into conflicts with family members.

Then, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional help. These situations are complicated and require professionals who understand how complex these issues are and that the solutions may require multiple strategies and resources. Focus on the Family has Christian licensed mental health professionals available to consult with grandparents who have significant concerns to discuss. They can be reached at 1-855-771-HELP (4357) M-F from 6 AM – 8 PM Mountain Standard Time and there is no charge for this service. You might want to request to talk with someone with the LMFT- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist- designation as these professionals are well trained in how to cope with problems within families. Although your time with one of the FOTF counselors will be limited, he or she will likely be able to suggest solutions or resources for you to explore or refer you to a Christian licensed and experienced mental health professional in your community.

It is important for grandparents to be willing to extend the “olive branch” and take the initiative to do all that they can to bridge the distance and seek reconciliation. However, what about situations where attempts have been made to do so, and they are refused? What about grandparents who are faithfully serving the Lord, and have not been permitted to see their grandchildren for more than four years? And when the adult children involved call themselves Christians and the grandchildren are being sent to Christian school? Situations like this are becoming increasingly common in our society, and one for which I have felt compelled to begin a ministry. I have done so with the goal of creating increased awareness of this cultural phenomenon and offer encouragement for others who are hurting. I appreciate your insight and look forward to hearing from you. Thanks
