Our grandkids are growing up in a divided nation. But this isn’t the first time America has struggled to stay united.
During the Civil War, president Abraham Lincoln invited his countrymen to observe a day of thanksgiving and praying. Lincoln called the people to pray for forgiveness for what he called our national perverseness and disobedience. He implored the Almighty Hand to heal and restore our nation as soon as may be consistent with the divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and union. Grandparents, this Thanksgiving, let’s read Lincoln’s stirring proclamation to our grandkids to remind them that only God can heal our hearts and our land.
