Praying for God’s Generational Blessing

Written by Tina Bradford, Director of Prayer

As I think of my grandmother, her legacy of praying for me was instrumental in my faith walk. I know she prayed for me, and God was faithful in answering her prayers.

Her prayers have blessed my faith since childhood, leading and guiding my life to serve the Lord with love and devotion. Her prayers are a living tangible example of “the fervent prayer of the righteous person has great power as it is working.” (James 5:16)

Do you have or know your spiritual lineage? Do you acknowledge the people God has used to teach and pray for you throughout your life? Do you praise and thank God for His calling and blessing upon you? What is most important for you to leave behind after you die?

Be a Praying Grandmother

My hope is to leave a legacy of fervent prayers, following the example of my grandmother. My goal is to be a praying grandmother whose prayers lead to God’s blessings on my children and grandchildren – a generational blessing.

Psalm 103:17 tells us “The steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children.”

That is my heart – my prayer. May God grant them spiritual strength and contagious love for Him. May He sanctify them by and with His Word, so they are courageous, confident, and content knowing He is all-powerful yet also merciful and forgiving through Jesus Christ.

Be a Praising Grandmother

May they remember me also as a praising grandmother. One who loved to praise God for His magnificent creation, His life-giving Word, and His saving Word through Jesus Christ.

May they remember our voices joining together in singing the Doxology as our family prayer of praise to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Be a Professing Grandmother

Memorizing and cherishing God’s Word is one of the disciplines and joys I hope to pass on to my children and grandchildren. This is another of the things I want them to remember about me.

As they learn and memorize His Word, may they believe the promises and share the truths with their children and grandchildren.

Answers to Prayer

God is already allowing me to see answers to prayers in the lives of our grandchildren. They believe God is the all-powerful Creator, Designer, and Lover of their souls. I have a granddaughter who is writing her own praise songs to God, then courageously singing them to large audiences.

God’s Word is taught as Truth and trustworthy. The grandchildren are brought to worship services, involved in community service opportunities, and are Christian educated. The prior and continuing prayers of their praising and professing parents and grandparents are being blessed.

A grandmother’s and grandfather’s prayers of faith and life testimony have been shown to be important and effective in the lives of their families. Young people with multigenerational supporters and mentors usually remain in service to God and His Church.

As a grandmother, I will seek to be this example so God’s generational blessings can be passed on from generation to generation.

Conclusion

As I contemplate what I want to leave behind, Ephesians 3:13-21 sums it up quite well.

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith – that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Editor’s Note: When we speak of generational blessings, let us not forget the men and women who fought for our freedom, giving the ultimate price. As we celebrate Memorial Day, let us remember and share so the next generation will know not only our country’s story but His Story.
