Question:
My grandchild is not a reader (by choice) nor does he like to talk on the phone or FaceTime. The thing he gets his enjoyment from is his video games. How can I compete with that?
We were very close until I had to move homes 3 years ago. I do pray for him, I just wish I knew what else I could do.
Response:
There are many age appropriate and content appropriate video games that two people can play while in different places. If you have access to a computer, you might want to find a few games that he might be interested in, ask him to choose one and set up regular times to play with him online.
Kids (especially boys) will often open up and talk when they are engaged in other activities, so you could play and talk at the same time.
It works well to focus on the game for several minutes and then throw in an open-ended comment or question while playing such as, “How is school going this year?” of “Tell me about your friends these days.”
